LG's OLED TV on display at CES 2010
There are few technologies more hotly anticipated in the TV/display market than OLED, but sadly we’re still a way off replacing our 50” plasmas with these wafer-thin low-power alternatives. Affordability is the main issue, and so far Sony has been one of few to have an early crack at the market with its US$2500 11” XEL-1.  Read More
Eton's Scorpion: multi-functional tool for adventurers
Eton showed its SCORPION for the first time today at CES. It's terming the unit a “solar-powered, all-terrain, multi-functional unit”, but that really doesn't quite capture how impressive this ruggedised device actually is, particularly given its recommended price of USD50. For starters, power can come three ways: via solar panel, dynamo hand-crank, or DC adapter, allowing use anywhere. Its ruggedised appearance, aluminum carabiner clip and LED flashlight leave no doubt it is aimed directly at the adventurer, particularly so with its offering immediate detailed weather conditions via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather bands. But wait, there's more ...  Read More
PocketRadar's mini speed radar.
Speed radar technology has become pretty much ubiquitous for traffic law enforcement around the world, but there are times when you and I would quite like to know how fast something is travelling too. PocketRadar is a hand-held personal speed measurement device about the size of a mobile phone that can get you a speed reading on a car half a mile away (or a baseball 120 feet away) in less than a second from being fully shut down. It's initially targeted at sports fans and athletes, but the company has flagged the possibility of a law enforcement version as well.  Read More
Kumho’s Tire Laser etching promises customized tyres
Get set to design your own tyre patterns. That’s the future of tyre technology as seen by Kumho, and although individual design-your-own tyre tread is probably some way away yet, it’s quite feasible that tire chains, vehicle manufacturers and other brands could soon have their name etched into the tread of the tires their fleet of cars use. According to Kumho, "Mass production tread patterns can be a compromise - part functional and part aesthetic. In the future, Kumho plans to design its treads in two stages. The functional requirement, free of compromise, will be moulded in the normal way. Any additional attributes or design features will then be etched onto the surface as required.”  Read More
Iomega's US$100 iConnect Wireless Data Station
Iomega's new iConnect Wireless Data Station is like a Pogoplug on steroids. Just plug in up to four of your existing USB storage devices, and connect it to your (wired or wireless) network, and you've got a web-accessible, Time Machine-compatible, UPnP-streaming, torrent-downloading and print-serving Network-attached storage (NAS) device - and it's only US$100.  Read More
Pi decimal place computing record broken by a humble PC
If there was ever a magical number, it is pi, the mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi appears in countless formulae in mathematics and engineering and is roughly 3.14159 though because it is an irrational number (meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating), it is forever the subject of efforts to calculate it to the most number of decimal places. Since 1995, the record has been held by supercomputers, which have progressed the record to 2577 billion decimal places. Now the record has been broken again, but this time by a desktop PC with a humble Core i7 CPU running at 2.93 GHz, with 6 GB RAM and 7.5 TB of disk storage.  Read More
AVL DiTEST DPM 800: dynamic pressure measurement for motorsport
With many auto racing formulae now requiring engines to last many races or a whole season, the new AVL DPM 800 (DPM stands for Dynamic Pressure Measurement) is a gadget many autosport race teams will be keen to get their hands on - it's an in-cylinder pressure transducer that comprises a proprietary Piezo spark plug system with built-in pressure sensor which will enable engine tuning and the accurate gauging of wear rates and potential longevity as the season progresses. The DPM 800 will cost EUR 6550 when it is launched at the Autosport Engineering Show at NEC in Birmingham next week - an absolute bargain compared to what it offers.  Read More

Your expensive running shoes could be destroying your knees, ankles and hips
It's early January - you're probably looking to work off some of your Christmas kilos and shed that festive spare tyre. For millions of people around the world, that means making a New Year's resolution, buying a new pair of runners and hitting the road for a jog. But a new musculoskeletal study has concluded that the average modern running shoe is significantly more damaging to your knees, hips and ankles than running barefoot - or even walking in high heels. With osteoarthritis of the knee representing the biggest cause of disability in the elderly, this is a serious finding that's worth taking into account if you want to protect your joints.  Read More
Etip gloves with X-Static tips (Photo: North Face)
You are in a freezing cold condition with a thick glove on. How do you use your touch screen GPS, touch screen phone or a touch screen media player without taking your gloves off? Well, you can if you are wearing the new North Face Etip gloves. They feature the company’s "X-Static" fabric on the tips of the thumbs and index fingers which allows you to operate any touch-screen device, without having to take them off.  Read More
